Murata's CC3000 TB current spike issue

Hello everyone,

I am facing a quite bad behavior using CC3000 + MSP430FR dev kit. When I debug a project using CCS, as soon as I enable the module by bringing EN pin high, the CC3000 module drains quite a lot of current at the really beginning ~4 amps which generate a quite large voltage drop (250mV) at the 3.6V VCC.

Then the debugger lost track of the device and get stuck at address 0xFFFE... What is funny is that with other plateform I get the same voltage drop, but I am still able to debug my code. Then I am stuck at the level of         WriteWlanPin( 1 ).

In order to over come the 100mA USB port limitation I use a hub which is fed through one USB port with a Energizer energy to go battery. Before then I also used the HUB Ac unit, but it is with the energizer that I ahave the lowest drop.

I also measured the current drawn by the CC3000 by replacing the VBat jumper by a 1 ohm resistor. Then when I scope the voltage I get approx a 4V spike at the resistor at startup, equivalent to a ~4A for few us. Does this make sense? Is it a known feature?

Is this a known issue and if so, do you have any work around please? I need to integrate a CC3000 in a design, so any relevant info will be highly valuable for a proper dimensioning of the power stage.

Regards,

Jean
