Telit JF2 Spi to msp430

Has anyone had any luck talking SPI to the GPS chip from Telit called the JF2?  I realize its full duplex, so I pull CS low, load the Tx buffer, but for some reason, I cannot seem to read from this JF2 IC.

While CS is low, I tx then I try to read.  Then pull CS high and there is no data.  I even tried a level shifter since the JF2 is 1.8VDC

Any ideas?
