BQ24195L: Power consumption during and after system status register read

Part Number: BQ24195L

I have observed something I wanted to reach out and ask if others may have noticed. I have been monitoring power consumption of the device and noticed an anomaly when reading the system status register (REG08).  At the moment, when my system is sleeping my current is about 250uA.  I noticed that when I read the BQ24195L system status register, the current spikes to 1200uA and stays there for a duration of about 1 second.  The I2C transaction has long since ended (it lasts about 400us) and I have gone back to sleep.  It appears that the bq24195 seems to be doing something for almost a second after the initial access of the I2C register(s) that consumes about 1mA of current from Vbat.  The amount of current is quite high so I wanted to ask if there is something I can do to reduce or eliminate this?  I cannot find anything in the data sheet to suggest what this might be causing this.

For reference, the BQ24195L is a component used on the Arduino MKR WAN 1310 (schematics are available on the Arduino web site).  I am using this board to do my testing with the BQ24195L.

This behaviour suggests it is not a good idea to poll the status of the bq24195 very often or even use it in host mode at all for low power applications?
