BQ25890: BQ25890 vs BQ25713

Part Number:BQ25890

Hi,

For my new project, I'm designing a NVDC power architecture with USB-C input (able to provide 5V @ 4A from an adapter) and a single cell Li Polymer 3.7 V nominal battery. The cell capacity is ~2000 mAh with 1C charge but the system load requires around 4.5A average current. The battery has 3C discharge capability and the battery run time is not an issue for the application (hence the low capacity). I also have to boost up the VSYS to 5V and I've selected the TPS61230A at 2.4 A.

For the charger, I'm looking at the BQ25890/92 but quickly realized the input current limit cannot be set to more than 3.25A. This means at 5V, I'll only get ~16.25W of input power. After efficiency losses, this might not be enough for my application.

Can the BQ25713 solve the problem and also eliminate the need for TPS61230A with the integrated buck/boost? Is there a better part you can recommend for my design?

Any input is appreciated as I'm finding my way through the high power devices of the BQ family. I've already used the 24160 in a previous application with success.

Thanks in advance!

Best,
Ganesan M.
